As a mother of three, I understand both the challenges and joys that accompany the nurturing of a little one. My initial encounter with breastfeeding was far from pleasant. Without any prior knowledge or expectations, I found myself grappling with doubts and discomfort, feeling as if I were caught in a whirlwind or embarked on a wild roller-coaster ride.

Nursing bras can be an invaluable asset for breastfeeding mums, starting right from pregnancy. In this article, we will explore how to choose the right nursing bra and size for you, and if there are any special considerations.

1) Consider your lifestyle:

When choosing a nursing bra, think about your daily activities and preferences. If you lead an active lifestyle or engage in regular exercise, opt for a bra with more support and flexibility.

On the other hand, if you spend most of your time at home, a comfortable and less structured bra might be suitable.

2) Choosing your right size:

A popular time to start wearing is the second trimester. It is not surprising to have first trimester mums wearing nursing bras too.

When it comes to measuring, I am sure many mums have questions and this is where I come in. For Lovemère, we only go by bust circumference. You use a measuring tape and go around the largest part of the bust.

If you are in the first trimester and early second trimester, upsize or go for bra extenders. If you are in the third trimester or just delivered, we recommend sticking to your current size and ensure your nursing bra has sufficient stretch. Always remember that your breast sizes can fluctuate during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

3) Decide on your fitting preference:

Some mothers prefer a snug fit to offer more support and shaping, while others prefer a looser fit for comfort, especially during nighttime feedings. Consider your personal preferences and choose a bra that aligns with your comfort needs.

4) Select the fabric material:

Try to go for soft, breathable fabrics that are gentle on your skin and prevent irritation. Moisture-wicking materials can also be beneficial to manage leaks and stay dry throughout the day. If you perspire frequently and have skin irritations frequently, we recommend cotton fabric would be the best for Singapore weather.

 

5) How to Ensure the Bra is a Good Fit?

• The bra fabric should not cut into the breast tissue and without breasts “spilling” out of the top of the cup. Any pressure on the breasts can increase the risk of mastitis or blocked ducts.
• Check that the side seams of the bra rest comfortably under the armpit.
• Ensure that the bra straps do not dig into the shoulders.
• Adjustable bra band can sit horizontally below the breasts and does not ride up.
• Consider the availability of space for breast pads. Adequate room in the cups of the bra ensures that breast pads can be inserted comfortably, helping manage leaks and keeping you dry throughout the day.

 

6) Seek professional fitting advice
You may consult with a professional bra fitter who specializes in maternity and nursing bras. They can help you find the right size and style that suits your needs perfectly.
